Dear Federation Member,

 

The Springfield Federation of Paraprofessionals, Local 4098, AFT Massachusetts, AFT, AFL-CIO will have an election for Constitutional Officers, AFT Massachusetts delegates, AFT delegates, WMALF delegates and Massachusetts AFL/CIO delegates, as listed on the attached, at its’ June 5, 2024 virtual membership meeting, the purpose of which shall be to conduct elections. 

 

We have attached copies of the Constitutional Election requirements and Nomination Petitions for those members who wish be a candidate for office and/or a delegate. 

 

If you wish be a candidate for a Constitutional Office or Delegate, please print the corresponding nomination petition (see below), print your name and the position for which you would like to be a candidate, have at least 10 members of the Springfield Federation of Paraprofessionals sign your nomination paper, sign and date the nomination petition and return your completed nomination petition(s) to Debora Husbands c/o Springfield Public Day Middle School no later than Friday, May 17, 2024 (NO EXCEPTIONS) through interoffice mail.

ARTICLE IV – OFFICERS

 

SECTION 1

The officers of this organization shall be the President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, each to serve for two (2) years or until their successors are elected.

SECTION 2

Vacancies in any office which occur between elections will be filled by the Executive Board.

SECTION 3

All officers must be members of the local, in good standing.

SECTION 4

All officers shall be elected by secret ballot, in order of preference, at either a membership meeting, individual school sites or electronically, dependent on circumstances or situations that present challenges relative to practicing social distancing. Notice of election shall be made at the previous membership meeting and

distributed to each member in good standing at least fifteen (15) days prior to the elections. The candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast shall be declared elected. In the event a majority is not attained, a run-off election will be held between the two (2) top candidates. If any office is unopposed, the members may instruct the Election Chairperson, by a motion from the floor and an affirmative vote, to cast one (1) roll call ballot for that office.

 

 

ARTICLE XII - AFFILIATION AND DELEGATES

(Qualifications, Nominations and Elections)

 

SECTION 1

 

This Federation shall maintain Affiliation with and whenever possible send delegates to the following organizations:

 

a)          The American Federation of Teachers- all delegates and alternates to the National Convention of the AFT shall be elected by majority vote at a membership meeting.  Notice of election shall be made at the previous membership meeting, distributed to each member at least fifteen (15) days prior to the election. The President and Secretary shall certify the election and forward the credentials of elected delegates and alternates to the AFT as soon as possible but not later than fifteen (15) days before the convening of the National Convention. The delegates shall confer with the treasurer to make sure the AFT per capita through June has been sent to the National Office at least fifteen (15) days before the convening of the National Convention. If any delegate/alternate is unopposed, the members may instruct the Election Chairperson, by a motion from the floor and an affirmative vote, to cast one (1) roll call ballot for that office.

 

b)          The AFT Massachusetts - all delegates and alternates to the AFT Massachusetts Convention shall be elected by majority vote at a membership meeting. Notice of election shall be made at the previous membership meeting and distributed to each member at least fifteen (15) days prior to the election. The President shall certify the election and forward the credentials of all elected delegates and alternates to AFT Massachusetts as soon as possible but not later than thirty (30) days before the convening of the Convention.  The delegates shall confer with the treasurer to make sure the full per capita of the local is paid through the second (2nd) month preceding the Convention date, such payment to be made no later than thirty (30) days prior to the opening date of the Convention. If any delegate/alternate is unopposed, the members may instruct the Election Chairperson, by a motion from the floor and an affirmative vote, to cast one (1) roll call ballot for that office.

 

 

c)          WMALF (Western Mass Area Labor Federation)- Delegates shall be elected at a regular

Membership meeting. If any delegate/alternate is unopposed, the members may instruct the Election Chairperson, by a motion from the floor and an affirmative vote, to cast one (1) roll call ballot for that office.

 

 

d)          The Massachusetts AFL-CIO- Delegates shall be elected at least one month before the state labor convention at a regular membership meeting. If any delegate/alternate is unopposed, the members may instruct the Election Chairperson, by a motion from the floor and an affirmative vote, to cast one (1) roll call ballot for that office.

Do you have a building representative at your school?  Building Representatives keep all the members of their buildings updated about union activities and help to make sure that your contractual rights are maintained.  If you don't have a building rep at your school you may want to consider taking on that important position.
